Doing the Gele Thing

 So I decided to do the gele (African Head wrap) thing. For the longest time my mum has been trying to get me to wear hats or african head wraps.
Gele's are traditionally used for many occasions from sunday services to weddings
and they have been part of Nigeria's history for a long time.
They come in various colours as well as texture,
but generally they are hand made from damask, brocade or asoke.
 I decided to give it a go as I observed from one of my aunty's,
 you don't have to wear the whole traditional outfit to wear a gele.

You  can actually wear these colourful materials with your usual english get ups like i did.
This was my first time tying the gele by myself
(many times someone ties the it for you)
I think i did a pretty ok job lol

In my Month of Faith!!

As the month of June comes to an end I am so happy and greatful to God for all his mercies towards me. In this month not only did I graduate but my boo proposed!!
I am so excited for these new chapters that are about to begin.
It's been four long years of school and honestly
 I could not have done it without my saviour Jesus Christ.

what do men wear?

I come from a house of girls and even went to an all girls school in london. I have realized that it is more challenging for me to come up with male designs than females. Even when shoping for the guy I am somewhat clueless. lol

I really think this is due to my surroundings. 

So, I always wonder what do men wear?? lol.

I mean when it comes to T-Shirts,
 I love the designs we have so far and I look forward to more wonderful designs.
I ask different guys every year and this year
I want to hear from all of you male and female,

Dream Cam

Hey everyone been busy with end of school and vacay lol but wanted to update you all on what I've been up to this December.  With 2013 approaching I've been looking out for a new camera Because believe it or not photoshoots are expensive!! yea I said it they are lol. So, I have been thinking of investing in a really good camera

in order to take some simple shots once in a while and share.

I am not looking to be a professional but this will be something new to me and

would increase my knowledge base in the fashion wold. After much research and web surfing 

I found this stunnnnnnning camera the Nikon D3X beautiful 

the sample shots look stunning and i fell in love with the camera! lol but not so much the price

yea its over $7000.00 for this bad boy. So I have decided to put it on my 

one day I am going to get you list (wish list).

Although stunning taking a trip to one of the stores I learnt you really dont need the most expensive

gaget on the market to get the Job done. 

He taught me that it is better to invest in a good camera base and an excellent lens (the part the sticks out).

This made a lot of sense so once I get my mix ill holla at you all !!

For now we can continue to dream

Small Beginnings...

I have been wanting to get this blog started since last year. As you may have noticed, this is just the second post. I did not know where to start. Well, now that that’s settled, I am going to start from the very beginning.

Lets take it back to Nigeria for a moment. Story story … once upon a time ...  joking!

As stated on the 'About Us' section of House of Dara’s page, fashion and designing has always been my passion. As early as in my 7th grade, I had started to design shorts and dresses but didn’t know how to sew. I even came up with the name 'GIG Clothing' that meant GodisGood...I know I did try. Lol.

At the age of 13, I started going to Marygrove camp for girls. Each session had a theme ranging from Hawaii week to Christmas and Halloween. Christmas was my favorite theme because we had Secret Santa and turkey dinner! As a camp counselor, one summer we were told that the Secret Santa gifts were to be hand made. This was challenging for me because I had no clue what to do. We finally picked a name and I picked one of my very best friends, Joanie. This motivated me to do better as I wanted something specific to her. So, I made her a pillowcase by cutting out pieces felt fabric to make letters, shapes, and to write her name. I ensured that the pictures matched her personality.

Well, who knew a Secret Santa present would make such a difference. Every year that I went camping during the Christmas session, I began making customized T-shirts as my Secret Santa gifts and the designs were all hand stitched.

Megan was one of my Secret Santa’s, she had long black hair and worked with the sun kids.
